I’ve noticed a recent trend in my work. Almost every one of my stories has a menage. Why? I don’t know.
I just feel this draw to write about threesomes. Is it because they’re more erotic than a couple, but less complex to write than a foursome? Yes I’ve written about four people and despite what you might think it does get complex trying to make sure that everybody gets a piece. At least it was for me. Back to my menage obsession, I think it might have something to do with this… what red blooded female wouldn’t want two hunky guys chasing after her, sandwiching her between them for a night of burn up the sheets sex.
But there is something else, perhaps writing menages is my way of challenge myself to push. Three characters, three points of view. Can I do it? Can I make it so it’s not confusing? Can I make it so all the charterers are understood? Can I write so no ones left out? Hmm maybe there’s more to writing about a love triangle than I thought. Or maybe it just boils down to I want to try a menage, but can’t, so I’m living vicariously through my characters. ![]()
What do you think dear readers, Is it…
A) Menages are erotic
B) I’m challenge my writing ablity
C) Living vicariously through my characters
D) All the above

For you, I’ll guess D.
I haven’t written too many menages. I stick to the two characters for the most part. Having more can make things a little complicating. However, as a reader I have found some of the stories with the extra characters bug me. I haven’t read a m/m/f yet to find out how I feel about that though have an offer to read one soon. However, I have read a few f/f/m and it bugs me. Not that there are three per say but that a male interrupts the females.
Then again, the one I’ve written with three is m/m/m. That’s just what I write (well, gay male, not the threesome usually). lol

I can live with D.
I’ve written f/f/m, but for the most part mine are m/f/m. I’ve read several really good m/m/f. But you have to be able to find a balance, which I noticed gets a little harder with two women and one guy.

Good question! I’ve never written a menage story, but come to think about it must be a real challenge to keep all the points of view straight. I think I’ll give it a go.

I don’t think a menage on its own is erotic. I still need to care about the characters and the reason they would do it. With two men and a woman I kind of envision that the guys are best friends, but with two girls on a guy it seems more like a competitive thing. And I’m speaking within the context of my own experience. I would imagine that a strong back story of all the characters would help to flush out their motivations and reactions to stimulus.

Evie: “…it must be a real challenge to keep all the points of view straight.” Hee hee…Nice Freudian work there, milady. I’m with you, too, Mia. In porn the importantfactor is “what”. In erotica, what’s important is “why”. Not just in menage scenes, either. For the upcoming eXcessica anthologies I’ve written two different m/m/f scenes and an f/f/f/m scene, though they haven’t “come out” yet (hee hee) so I’m not sure how successful I’ve been. But I did complete the writing, which is one step ahead of all the other menage scenes I’ve tried.

Evie + Willsin- Keeping the diffrent charater straight can be a challenge but you also have to make it so it’s not confusing for the reader. Which I thinks the harder part.
Mia- I’m not sure if I agree the menage aren’t erotic in and of themselves. But I can say that in the f/f/m I’ve written the women are usually friends or loves already.

That didn’t occur to me. I wrote a menage scene in Cinderella Club where the main character watches two twins get it on with her ex-boyfriend. But it was not from the menage point of view. It was from the voyeur.
There’s also the young married couple seduced by a beautiful foreign girl as in the film Summer Lovers. That works. Still sex w/o emotion is simply not sexy to me.
