Real Sex, Baby!

PhotobucketAs erotic authors we make sex look hot and well… sexy. We don’t talk about how the heroine gets a leg cramp, or they fall off the bed trying a pose they saw in a porno. We write hot scenes were the guy goes for hours, giving the heroine orgasm after pleasure inducing orgasm. We write about spectacular oral sex by both characters.

Yet in truth, these things rarely occur. Would readers appreciate it if we wrote about characters that fall off the bed and break their wrist trying something from the Karma- Sutra? Hmm, while it might be hilarious to us would it be to others? In real sex we bang our heads, and get cramps, gag reflexes kick in during oral… these things aren’t really sexy, are they. Real sex is messy.  Seriously have you ever tried getting chocolate syrup out of your hair, or sheets? Not fun.

So do readers want real or the fantasy of sex that we weave for them?

Have you ever seen the movie “The Tall Guy”? It starred Jeff Goldblum and Emma Thomson, and had arguably the most realistic sex scene ever in terms of things being messy and going wrong. I remember specifically a moment where they roll around on the floor together and one of them squashes a small carton of milk with their buttocks. I believe there’s a bit of work against a wall, too, which brings pictures falling down around them…

Nope never seen it. But it sounds interesting.

More realistic sex in novels now and then would certainly be refreshing.

On a related note, I recommend checking out the Literary Review’s Bad Sex in Fiction Prize:

    Some it’s just…eww.

Okay I couldn’t even read all those and I’ve read some bad stuff in my time.
